The secrets of the clove forest

Greetings from Singaraja, North Bali
In Ringo's new car we made a road trip to the north of Bali mostly to visit an essential oil guy, but also to check out the handicraft companies of this area.
We first met Pak Yogi at a wedding in Ringo's hometown - his Niece was marrying Ringo's Nephew. So now we are family he is happy to introduce us to all the craft folk he knows.
Singaraja is the second city of Bali. The forgotten city, it was, until 1974 the capital city, squashed between the sea and steep banks of mountains behind it was difficult to build an airport. So eventually the capital was moved to Denpasar (which translates as the Southern Market). Singaraja translates as Lion Kingdom.. and is famous for the wild freedom fighters who, like lions, lived in the jungles and forests above the city and fought for independence from the colonial Dutch in the 1940's..
We took an unusual root across the island in order to call and see a supplier on the way, this took us over one of the highest bridges in Indonesia (we stopped to walk across it). And then up high over the mountain range that hangs over the North coast. It turns quite cool at the top, but warms up fast as you drop down the steep windy roads through the clove forests. Ringo tells me that in the clove forests are some of the oldest villages in Bali where aboriginal people still live - the original inhabitants of Bali. I have heard that in this area farmers distil clove oil directly. We ask in a few village shops if they know about any distillery - eventually one old lady tells us her daughter collects fallen leaves and twigs and takes them to a place in a forest clearing. After asking several people and turning down small tracks we find the place. We can smell the scent of cloves heavy in the air and then see a set of large tanks filled with steaming murky liquid. Three guys are working there running a rustic but effective clove oil distillery.. they are happy to show us around, the manager is actually from Java and Bondhan can speak his local language.
The clove leaf sodden tanks are heated underneath by a fire fed by more dried clove leaves. As the water evaporates a concentrated fluid is pipped off and drained through a series of tubs. I can't say I real understand the process but somehow they end up with buckets of sticky clove oil. This is shipped back to Java for refining before - we understood - being sold to the cigarette factories for use in clove cigarettes.
I'm not sure we can buy oil directly from here.. but it was quite amazing to find this place. Bondan has the WhatsApp of the manager, so we will see what happens, I'm hoping we can make connections with the Java boss.
After arriving in Singaraja we went to visit Pak Yogi. In Indonesia everyone uses herbal or ayurvedic oils.. Ringo keeps a roll-on in his car. Insect bites.. no problem.. sprains, backache, burns.. I have just the thing.. headache a little of this will help. There are about four main brands sold all over Indonesia, the best known is Kutus-Kutus - which means 88 in Balinese language. Pak Yogi told us the story of Kutus-Kutus.. It was a Dutch guy who was running a restaurant in Jakarta in the 1980's - he went bankrupt in the financial crash, started again.. failed again. Decided to try his hand on Bali and opened a restaurant in Kuta at the wrong time.. just before the Bali bombing and failed again.
Walking on the beach at Sanur contemplating how bad life was he slipped and sprained his ankle.. a local pulled out his herbal oil and massaged the sprain.. surprised at how quickly he felt better.. and also how the aromatics helped his negativity to fade away he started to investigate the local oils.. another Balinese friend suggested the name and Kutus-Kutus was born.
Maybe there is a bit of poetic license in Pak Yogi's story.. but it is inspiring.. now Kutus-Kutus is a huge company one of the wealthiest in Bal owning hotels and property everywhere.
But maybe Pak Yogi's story is more interesting... his grandfather was one of the lions - the freedom fighters living in hiding in the jungle. He developed a special herbal compound used to treat injured fighters, this recipe passed down the generations and gradually refined and improved. It's not a blend of oils.. rather a blend of raw herbs combined, treated and turned to oil.. Pak Yogi has painstakingly acquired the safety standards and licences to sell his product on the open market. Earlier this week he was at the G20 handing out samples to the great and good.
But unlike Kutus-Kutus and the other main brands (I have tried) Pak Logi is happy to give us a UK and EU distribution agreement and willing to work with us to make it work.
This will take sometime.. maybe six months so don't get too excited. But I'm excited, this is something I have been keen to do for a long time.
While we are are here in North Bali we have seen lots of interesting local.. I will maybe update you next week.
For now here is a small Road Trip video made on the fly by our man Bondan..
This week at AW was our 27th birthday.. and like every year we had a celebration.. I'd like to thank everyone who sent good wishes.. so many people have started businesses after being inspired by the story of AW.. to them I'd like to send extra special positive thinking vibes and greetings.. Actually I had a small epiphany regarding Positive Thinking / Problem Solving.. I'll tell you about it next week.
And thinking positive we have some on the trend products and deals for you..
Take care - much love and peaceful vibes from Bali.
David
