A sad day

Greetings from sunny but cold España
Hope you had a good week, and things are picking up for the upcoming season of love, kicking off with Valentine's day.. in only 3 weeks.
It's been super busy, partly because of the aforementioned V-day.. but also because so much.. much delayed stock is finally rolling in. The supply line crisis is kind of ridiculous, not only are shipping costs astronomically high but the delays are crazy. One container of incense (normally 4 to 5 weeks shipping) is now four a half months in transit. What the hell is going on?
Gosh.. sorry to rant. These days it is hard work being an importer or comes to that.. an exporter. Which (big sigh) brings me to the fact that we have finally reluctantly reached a point where we had to make a sad and difficult decision. And so I have a statement to make.. see below.
Last week I was telling you about the ONE important thing never to forget in any business and especially the gift trade if you want to grow and succeed.. if you missed it you can recap here..
Ok deep breathe. We fought against this for a long time, but inch by bloody inch we have been slowly losing the damn battle. There was a time when our sales to the EU were more than half of our sales. Our French, German, Polish and Italian websites were booming.. growing 30% a year. Every week truck loads of British made aromatics products, plus our Indian and Indonesian imports flowed across the channel and found their way to thousands of European gift shops. Creating and sustaining lots of jobs in our marketing office, the warehouse and the aromatics factory. Sadly as you know Brexit happened, and even though we put our best brains on the problem and devised cunning plans to overcome the obstacles.. bit by bit the inevitable happened. The EU customers that used to love us gradually became disillusioned with the long transit times, the unexpected taxes, the complicated paperwork, the VAT to pay and reclaim. They started giving us bad reviews.. sales growth reversed.. and nothing we could do could save the day.
So this week we reluctantly decided to close our dedicated EU websites. They after so many years are being wound down. It's a sad day.
It's really sad, we sadly had to let our French webmaster go Mauro, our Italian mystro has been redeployed and so has Radek our Polish guy. All those EU websites are being redirected to our EU distribution warehouses. Of course, we can still handle exports via our UK website just like we always did to the rest of the world.. it's just that now the EU is the same system as "the rest of the world".
It's not all bad.. UK sales are up as customers struggle to buy stuff from Europe, our EU based businesses are doing really well, but they were growing even before Brexit and as department stores close, independents are opening fast.. so new customers are coming our way. The world is changing. We have to change with it.
If you are an EU customer, the good news is you can order from our Spain or Slovak distribution centres. Until the end of the month, you can still place an order on the EU dedicated sites. After that you can still order as an importer from our UK main site (in English).
But as I pointed out two weeks ago.. the ONE THING that saves us is blinking obvious but easy to lose track of.. and whatever they throw at us we must not lose sight of the fact that.. Excellent Products - New Products - Repeat Selling Products.. that delight our/your end customers. It is what not only keeps us all in business but sustains that virtuous circle that supports family businesses in India, Indonesia and beyond.
Early yesterday morning I took a call from Bondan (Ringo's new assistant in Indonesia) on a trip to Java.. He was quite excited to find a town with lots of small family businesses making seagrass and bamboo products.. OMG!.. so creative and beautiful. Yesterday I spent time with our new agent in Nepal who had found a factory out in the Kathmandu valley.. another family business making eco-felt products that look amazing. Both online meetings resulted in potential winning new products put into development. The other day Mr Chatterjee went to a remote village in Bengal to visit a singing bowl factory. Without giving away too many secrets here are some pictures and videos.
From Upendra in Nepal
From Bondan in Java
From Mr. Chattergee in India
We also have lots of things happening in India.. Mr Chatterjee found a village making Singing Bowls deep in the Bengal hinterland.
But you know it is seriously hard to make it happen from a distance.. so I booked my flights to Asia.. I will be on my way again in a few weeks.
These are difficult times to travel.. but I'm hoping that by the time I go things will ease and I can get around without long quarantines and complex visa requirements.
Challenging but exciting times..
Hope you are along for the ride by following these newsletters.
More good news.. Indian and Chinese containers this week - lots of things back in stock. New: Spell Candles they have already been on sale in Slovakia and selling very well there.
Take care
Have a great weekend.
