Greetings from East Java

Last week I was telling you about the arrival of Coco (my wife and your China agent) to Bali. After 900 days separated by covid.. If you missed it you can catch up here.
After a few days in Ubud seeing things I never see, because who goes to tourist attractions on their own, it's time to get back to work.
A long-planned trip to East Java.. we took a packed and very cramped Lion Air flight (not recommended) from Denpasar, Bali to Surabaya, Java. Ringo, his assistant Bondhan, Coco and me..
The first mission to an area where marble, granite, onyx and million year old fossilised wood is found. Bondhan had discovered a village deep in East Java beneath the mountains where almost everyone was making stone crafts..
Since it is very difficult to buy pestle & mortars in China these days we thought at least maybe we can find it here.

But Java is a big island with only a few fast roads, so from the airport to the area we wanted to visit was a four hour drive. The only decent hotel was in a town called Tulungagung, famous for three things.. 1. The world's largest cigarette factory which we drove past for quite a while. 2.  The beautiful marble and onyx mined locally - our hotel was made of the stuff from top to bottom. 3. It's cheap here.. the hotel is less than £25 a night including an excellent breakfast buffet. We ate out at the Steak Barn restaurant for four people including steak for £15..

Bondan who speaks the local language had done the groundwork, he had discovered the place a while back and already made some contacts. So we could just take it to the next level and do the business.

From the hotel to the village was still quite a drive.. but as we arrived you could see it was geared for business.. the Stone business.. huge stone lions, showrooms full of every kind of statue.. small and large workshops. We spent two days exploring getting to know the locals
and discovered that quite a lot of production is made for export to the USA, Australia and some European companies.  Friendly people.. one guy with a beautiful showroom and a well organised warehouse with a container loading dock even offered to consolidate orders and load them in his warehouse, no problem if we buy from the competition.  Later he told us that his grand-father had been one of ten sons that all got into the stone craft business, the second generation of those ten sons now made up most of the businesses in town.  Each one specialising one particular stone craft. Stone Birthday Numbers
From huge Buddha statues to every type of stone soap dish, to bathroom basins made from huge river stones..  they even make jewellery from onyx beads.. so lots of possibilities. Gemstone Bracelets

We managed to order from one business and have another couple in the process. Still hoping to secure a deal    for supply
of rare petrified wood - which is claimed to be over a million years old, it can be fashioned into candle holders and interesting bowls

This is the grandson son of the village founder and his wife with some of that petrified wood.

A couple of months ago I was in Morocco, also miles from anywhere, in a village in the shadow of mountains where gemstones were found. Here are different stones but the same type of craft workshops and creativity.
Regular readers will recall..

We will definitely come back, lovely gentle people - small family businesses easy to do deal with and a wealth of local craft skills. So well done to Bondan for once again opening up a new source of beautiful craft items.
After the stone village, we hit the road again this time travelling to Central Java and the city of Solo.. where we are today.

The teak craft villages are near, but also this is a major area for textiles.. so let's see what will happen..

Meanwhile back in UK.. it's hotter than here I understand. So I hope you are enjoying the weather. Things are really hotting up.
Sales of many items are also hotting up. we have your fast-selling summer stock right here right now..

Some other good news at our Aromatics factory.. AW-Aromatics new factory and warehouse is nearing completion. We are already using the warehouse space..
This means we can supply many products directly from the aromatics factory.. if you are interested in making your own branding. What we call white label items.
