Greetings from the beautiful island of Crete

I'm on holiday with Coco. On the island of Mythology, where the ancient Gods and Goddesses held court. Over the years we have been to Crete a few times, and we love the little villages, fresh food, clean air, the smell of olives and pine trees and lots of ancient wisdom. We like to go a little off track, just hire a car and travel randomly around the island, finding rooms in small villages on spec. But for safety I'd booked the first two nights in the small resort town of Bali about 40 minutes from the airport.

I had managed to find a (slightly strange) flight leaving from Malaga at 1.55am to Athens, transit to Thessaloniki and onward to Heraklion Crete. And as we drove to Malaga airport, I had a strong feeling in my gut, apprehension maybe, do you know what I mean? - when you just feel something bad will happen but can't explain it...

We dropped the car off in the car hire returns area, dumped the keys in the out of hours drop-bin and headed up to the check-in desks. I opened my logged in tickets in google wallet.. to find a message "Flight Cancelled" - What!! That's a great start to our holiday. At the check-in desk we found the usual queue waiting for check-in to open. I showed my phone message to the lady behind the desk.. Oh really she said looking a little shocked.. picking up her phone and speaking rapidly for a long time to someone.. when she hung up, she said no problem, it's just a mistake.. but there was an hour delay. I wondered how many fellow travellers had seen that message and just gone back home..

Here is some strong travel advice: Always take pictures of your luggage including hand luggage.. you never know when you might need them.

When we checked in - I pointed out that we had missed the connecting flights, but the lady still issued the flight tickets. As we boarded the plane the same check-in lady was there and she told us that there was no room for large hand luggage and Coco cabin bag was whisked away and I was given another luggage tag stuck to the back of my flight ticket.

We arrived in Athens, and an email very efficiently informed us we had been booked on a different flight to Crete leaving in a couple of hours, and sure enough a ground staff member handed us fresh tickets as we left the plane.

Whilst waiting, I checked the hand-luggage tag, in the box marked "final destination" was the letters SKG - that's a big mistake - I thought (not Crete) and went to find the Aegean desk to report it. They fixed it with a few taps on the keypad - and told me all OK now. Anyway when we finally landed in Crete, and collected our luggage when the belt finally stopped, of course Coco's bag was missing.

Coco was very stressed, because in that bag was all the essential things, meds, jewellery, important papers. A nice lady called Olga took our details at the lost luggage desk, and assured us it would be found and forwarded to our hotel. But a day later she called me to say the tag had probably come off, and they needed a picture of the bag to locate it.. we found one by luck..

Anyway the town of Bali is beautiful, and maybe because of it's name - it has built up connections with the Island of Bali (regular readers will know we have a warehouse and offices there). Our hotel is furnished almost completely with stuff from Bali. Many restaurants and bars have Balinese light shades and even the shops have plenty of Balinese giftware. It's a total coincidence that this old fishing village is called Bali. The origin for the name of the village was the Turkish word balik, meaning fish.. But it's funny how name coincidences can shape a place.. They even have Yoga studios and Bali style spa's here and Coco felt relaxed practicing Yoga on the cliff top.

Olga called me and said the luggage had been on a solo european tour and had been found in Stuttgart, Germany.. and would arrive in Crete at midnight, because the tag was missing we must go to the airport to collect. That was good news and bad news.. But turns out Olga was slightly confused or misinformed.. because as we went to breakfast, someone had delivered the lost bag already - there it was sat
