It's summer proper, and time to kick back and enjoy the sunshine and that.. with the right approach should be good for business.

Last week I was telling you about all the news from around AW around the world.. if you missed it you can catch up here.

Our man in India, Mr Chatterjee was telling me how unbelievably hot it is in the Kolkata area - but since then it has gone from hot to inferno level HOT. He tells me it's hitting 45c and almost impossible to work even with air conditioning, three of his staff fainted. He is doing his best to look after people.. they are praying for the monsoon rains to come and cool things down.

In Gujarat coastal area of North India a massive cyclone is hitting.. this is an area many of our gemstone and crystal companies are based. I'll get updates..

Last week I asked you for help and feedback - and we got hundreds of feedback responses.. THANK YOU so much.. I have been checking them carefully and learned so much. It seems that some people are busy but many are suffering from a strange drop off in trade.. Comments like "People are more careful with money" or "Sales just dropped off a cliff" - are quite common... But others said the interest in metaphysical or esoteric products has never been higher.. and we can see that crystal products are a boom area.. Let me tell you about some Ancient (personal) History..

1980's those were the days!

Many moons ago, a long time before the internet - back in the days when Prince and the Revolution were singing "Purple Rain" and Tina Turner was asking "What's love got to do with it?".. I was just starting out as a very young business person. My first big success was a company that encouraged customers to refill.. it was called "Weigh & Save" - the first shop opened in Harpurhey market in Manchester (I think in 1983). It was the first of its kind.. and a huge success, and with a team of enthusiastic very young people we opened over 100 shops across the UK very rapidly. The idea that you could avoid packaging, buy the amount you actually needed and save money - at a time of severe austerity it just caught on and we grew like crazy. Customers just scooped what they needed from big barrels and at the till we weighed and saved for them. We sold dried foods like rice, sugar, coffee etc.. Looking back there were fundamental problems, like hygiene and contamination - but in 1985 nobody cared. Do you remember those shops? Some still exist and lots of people copied the concept. The point is even then I knew that packaging was wasteful and (don't like to brag) but my team and I were truly ahead of the curve.

Anyway.. moving on.. today is World Refill Day.. now we are much more aware of the devastating impact of global warming, (with awful heat and storms in India happening now) and also folk having to watch the pennies more.. It's time to refocus on reuse and refill. I have been pushing my teams for a long time to get a nice refill station system for you to use.. In Bali a while back I had a refill station display stand designed and made (suitably) from recycled wood from old fishing boats. The pandemic disrupted shipping costs and the cost of shipping them was prohibitive.. we ended up with a warehouse in Bali full of them.. but now we are back to normal.. and we have them arriving in Europe.

Working on the original Refill Station Design.. back in the pandemic days when I was trapped in Bali. We had wanted to use refillable metal canisters - to avoid plastic altogether, but that proved to be impossible, the taps don't really work well and the canisters are too expensive. But anyway we can do it.. Also from Indonesia are refillable Coconut and Teakwood soap dispensers that also make great gifts and look beautiful in your customers' bathrooms. And made specially to fit in the Refill Station stand.
In the 1980's lots of people copied us and "weigh to save", "weigh & pay", "weigh ahead", "natural weigh".. haha so many bad puns got turned into good businesses.. and many survived.. now they are been reinvented as Refill Shops. Not just food, but everything.
