Greetings from India, I'm at the Denmark Pub, a restored heritage hotel on the banks of the Ganges in the town or Serampore near Kolkata.
It's early morning as I write, I can hear dogs barking, a crow, people on the street calling to each other, horns honking.. cars and boats.. it's India it's noisy.
Last week I was telling you about our new dog Happier, who has adopted us at our Bali warehouse, you can read about it here.
On Wednesday I took a Malindo air flight to KL airport. 80% of people wearing masks, many latex gloves, the business lounge was all but deserted. Strange times right now. Then a 4 hour flight to Kolkatta, arriving at midnight. Crashed at the Swiss hotel near the airport (welcome back Mr David). The next morning met up with Tomas who had arrived earlier and our man in India Mr Chatterjee. After breakfast we drove to Sermpore, spent the day checking work in progress at Mr Chatterjee factory, where his team produce eco-friendly jute and cotton bags for us.
Regular readers will know I usually stay at the Royal Hotel, which has to be the worlds worst, my last visit was bad.. very bad! - with stained sheets, cold water and assorted insects as fellow guests. Fortunately, it's not the only hotel in town anymore.. The Denmark Pub has just opened, it's a restored heritage building previously occupied by the local police, it was discovered that the building had been a Danish Tavern in olden days when the Danish people occupied the area in 1755 and probably traded opium and such along the river.
The building has been restored with money from Denmark, it's a living museum, and run by the Park Hotel group, so excellent staff. They are still painstakingly restoring it, it will take years, so far only two rooms are available, but I have to say they are palatial. I'm in one and Tomas the other.. so haha we have block booked a whole hotel..

Later of course the British via the mercantile skills of the East India company come to rule all India, and this Englishman is back trading much more respectable goods. Jute and cotton.
After checking the stock and then going over our ideas for new products and commissioning a range of samples that will be produced in the evening we retired to the Denmark Pub. Ravi who is Mr Chatterjee's business partner showed me news feed on his mobile that claimed that drinking whiskey protected you against coronavirus - Fake News! me and Tomas cried.. then after a seconds thought.. oh well it's worth a try, so we opened a bottle of Black Label.
