The original name of this stone comes from a legend popular in Madagascar. According to it, when dragons died, their remains became ossified and settled to the bottom of the sea. And from them Dragon Stones were formed, with an extraordinary mixture of yellow, golden brown and black, with a hint of grey.

This precious stone is most often composed of calcite, aragonite and grey limestone, and is made of marine sediments by volcanic eruptions. However, its uniqueness also means numerous surprises in the composition. We can find specimens containing, among others, hematite, flint, jasper, dolomite and pyrite.

Dragon Stone is considered as the perfect stone for the knowledge-hungry people.

Will every stone in a delivery have the same polish and finish? +

No. Natural inclusions, small surface pits, variations in polish and slightly irregular shapes are normal with tumble stones. These characteristics should not automatically be treated as faults unless a piece is clearly broken or badly damaged.

How can I stop customers mixing up similar-looking stones in a pick-and-mix display? +

Keep each variety in a clearly labelled compartment rather than combining similar colours in one bowl. This is particularly useful for jaspers, agates and tiger’s eye varieties, which can look surprisingly alike to someone new to crystals.

Can different tumble stones damage each other if stored together? +

Potentially. Gemstones vary considerably in hardness and toughness, so repeated rubbing or knocking can leave softer stones scratched or chipped. Divided trays or separate containers are preferable for longer-term storage and busy self-select displays.

What is the safest general advice for cleaning these stones? +

A soft cloth is the simplest option when the exact mineral or treatment is uncertain. Many coloured gemstones tolerate mild soapy water, but steam, ultrasonic cleaners, chemicals and high heat are not suitable for every stone, so one cleaning method should not be recommended across the entire range.

Do I need specialist crystal knowledge to sell these effectively? +

Not necessarily. Clear labelling with the gemstone name is a good starting point, while staff can gradually learn the traditional associations customers commonly ask about. If discussing crystal properties, present them as traditional or spiritual beliefs rather than proven health benefits.
