A Tale of Two Islands

Lombok lies just across the water from Bali, but it has its own distinctive culture and a long tradition of working with terracotta. Pottery – known locally as gerabah – forms an important part of Sasak craft heritage, with clay shaped into vases, vessels and useful household objects. Traditional patterns often take their inspiration from the culture and natural landscape of the island. Wonderful Indonesia

These vases begin their journey in Lombok, where the terracotta forms are made. They then travel to neighbouring Bali, where local artisans apply the decorative finishes. It gives each piece a rather lovely two-island story – Lombok pottery meets Balinese design.

The finished look is earthy but contemporary. Soft cream, chocolate and natural shades allow the vases to work with all sorts of interiors, while the swirls, Greek-inspired forms, bamboo textures and fashionable donut shapes give them enough personality to stand out.

Display them alone as pieces of ceramic art or add dried grasses, seed heads and decorative stems. For a particularly tempting shop display, group different heights and shapes together and add a few Cantal Grass Bunches. One vase looks good; three together can look rather fabulous.

As artisan-finished pieces, small differences in colour, texture and surface are perfectly natural – and part of what makes them more interesting than something rolling endlessly off a factory line.
