Brass Door Knockers
  • A gift with a job to do – Hang a sample on a board and customers can see it on their own front door. A useful reason to stop at the display, especially for new-home gifts and animal lovers.

  • Animal heads with character – Handmade brass from a family-owned business in Indonesia, with the shape and detail of a small sculpture as well as the working knocker. There is more here to look at, and to hold, than an ordinary plain ring.

  • Let the brass be handled – The weight and the detail are easier to appreciate in the hand than in a distant photograph. Give customers one they can lift and try.

  • A choice of personalities – Stag and horse for country-home tastes, cat and elephant for gifts, with ram and tiger for customers drawn to something less expected.

  • One fitting detail to say aloud – Screws are not included. Tell customers before they leave the shop, so they can choose fixings to suit their particular door.

  • An entrance that grows older gracefully – Brass changes tone with time and exposure; that natural ageing is part of the look, not a promise that every piece will stay bright.

Start with the door, then notice the head

A door knocker is a very small bit of architecture. People pass it every day, yet the one they choose says quite a lot about the house. These animal heads are handmade in brass by a family-owned business in Indonesia. They sit nicely beside the brass collectables: there is the same pleasure in seeing the detail close up and feeling the piece in the hand, with the added satisfaction that this one can go to work on the front door.

Let customers hear the idea

Show one knocker mounted on a firm display board, with enough room to lift the ring and see how it moves. A close photograph of the head is useful online; in a shop, the working sample does the explaining. Stag and horse are an easy starting pair for a country or garden-centre display, while the other animals make a more playful gift choice. Give each design a little space. Animal heads in a heap look less like a collection and more like a very small argument.

Fixing screws are not supplied. The buyer needs to select suitable fixings for the door and check the positions and a secure fit before use. Handmade pieces can vary a little in size, so show the dimensions for the chosen design rather than suggesting that one template fits every door. Brass can develop a deeper tone with handling and weather; a gentle wipe with a soft damp cloth followed by drying is a sensible first approach to care.

Selling, Display & Marketing Ideas

  • Give it a door to live on – Fix the handling sample to a small wooden door section or solid display board, with a simple label noting that screws are not supplied.

  • Show both views – Photograph the whole knocker on a door and then a tight close-up of the animal head. Include its dimensions: a front-door purchase is difficult to judge from a cropped head shot alone.

  • Build a little country-house corner – Put the stag and horse near housewarming gifts and complementary brass homeware, with the more unusual animals beside them for a second look.
