How to Choose the Right Cotton Tote Bags

A tote bag looks like a wonderfully simple thing.

Two handles. A piece of cotton. Somewhere to put your shopping.

Then you start buying them for a shop and suddenly there are questions. 4oz or 10oz? Short handles or long? Gusset or no gusset? Printed, embroidered, plain... and why does one bag feel reassuringly substantial while another feels as though a particularly ambitious loaf of bread might finish it off?

We have been working with cotton bags for many years, particularly with our makers in India, and there is one thing I have learnt: there isn't one "best" tote bag.

There is simply the right bag for the right customer.

So, if you're choosing from our Wholesale Cotton Tote Bags, here are the things I would look at before filling the shelves. Ancient Wisdom's current cotton range includes lightweight 4oz bags, everyday 6oz styles and considerably heavier options, alongside plain, printed and artisan designs.

Start With the Fabric — Because Weight Changes Everything

The weight of a cotton bag tells you quite a lot before you have even picked it up.

A lightweight 4oz cotton bag can be ideal for small gifts, events, simple shopping and lower-priced purchases. It folds easily, takes up very little display space and does the basic job rather well.

Move up to 6oz and you have something more substantial for everyday use. Books, bits from the market, lunch, whatever else seems to accumulate during the day.

Then there are 8oz, 10oz and even heavier cotton bags. These feel much more like an accessory than simply a carrier. Ancient Wisdom's Nomad Sari range, for example, includes 10oz zipped totes, while oversized styles reach 14oz cotton.

So, how do you choose the right tote bag?

Start with what you expect your customer to do with it.

For inexpensive everyday shopping, lighter cotton can make perfect sense. For a lifestyle boutique, bookshop or gift shop where the bag itself is the product, a heavier fabric often gives customers more perceived value.

And don't judge quality by thickness alone. Good stitching, handles, finishing, lining and construction matter just as much.

Think About What Your Customers Will Actually Carry

Size sounds obvious, but it is remarkably easy to get wrong.

A small tote can make a lovely gift bag. A medium one works for everyday errands. A large tote starts becoming useful for groceries, the beach, work or those customers who appear to carry half their household everywhere they go.

Then there is the gusset.

A flat cotton tote is simple and economical, but adding depth at the sides or base changes how much the bag can realistically carry. Ancient Wisdom's tie-dye range, for example, uses a roomy 38 × 42 × 12cm format, which gives considerably more usable space than a flat bag of similar height and width.

This is also where you should think seriously about your target market.

What is the target market for tote bags?

In reality, it is wonderfully broad. Gift-shop customers, students, commuters, book lovers, market shoppers, eco-conscious customers, festival visitors and travellers can all have a use for one.

But the design changes the audience.

Our Nomad Sari Printed Tote Bags suit customers drawn to expressive artwork, symbolic designs and a more alternative or travel-inspired look. Tie-Dye Cotton Bags work particularly well in colourful, bohemian, festival and lifestyle shops. More refined Embroidered Cotton Bags, meanwhile, can sit naturally in garden centres, boutiques and gift shops where customers are looking for something that feels a little more special.

Same basic idea.

Very different customer.

Look Closely at Handles, Seams and the Small Details

This is the part I always think deserves more attention.

Pick up the bag.

Pull the handles gently. Look where they join the body. Check the seams. Look inside.

A good-quality tote should feel as though the handles and bag belong together rather than having merely been introduced five minutes ago.

For heavier everyday bags, wide shoulder straps can make carrying considerably more comfortable. Reinforced stitching around stress points is also important, particularly if customers are likely to use the bag for groceries, books or laptops.

Some more premium bags go further. The Agnes + Cat embroidered totes, for example, use 10oz cotton, a full inner cotton lining, an internal pocket and wide shoulder straps.

So how can you tell if a tote bag is good quality?

Look beyond the artwork. Check the weight and feel of the fabric, stitching around the handles, seam consistency, lining if there is one, closures, pockets and overall finish.

A beautiful print might make somebody pick the bag up.

Construction is what makes them keep using it.

Decide Whether the Bag Is the Product — or Your Canvas

There are really two ways of thinking about branding.

Sometimes the design is the reason customers buy the bag. That is where prints, embroidery, colour and artisan details come into their own.

At other times, simplicity is exactly what you need.

Plain cotton bags give retailers, businesses and event organisers space for their own logo, screen print, stamp or artwork. Ancient Wisdom's plain cotton options are specifically suited to custom branding and printing.

Before ordering, check the usable print area rather than simply the overall bag dimensions. Handles, seams, gussets, pockets and stitching can all reduce the practical space available for a design.

And if branding isn't the objective, let the craftsmanship do the talking.

Alongside printed cotton there are embroidered designs, traditional tie-dye techniques and mixed-natural-material options such as Jute Cotton Bags, which introduce more texture and structure to a display. Ancient Wisdom's jute-and-cotton styles include spacious reversible designs made in India as well as heavier natural bags combining the two fibres.

So, What Tote Bags Are Popular Right Now?

This is always the dangerous question because fashions move.

At the moment, larger practical totes continue to have a strong fashion presence, while understated, reusable bags remain part of everyday life. Recent 2026 fashion coverage has also highlighted bigger bags and roomy tote silhouettes alongside more expressive statement styles.

From a retailer's point of view, though, I wouldn't chase one trend too hard.

The safest collection usually has a little balance: an affordable everyday cotton tote, something stronger and more substantial, and a few designs with enough personality to stop somebody walking past.

Plain for the practical customer.

Printed for the person who wants a little character.

Embroidered, tie-dyed or artisan-made for the customer who picks something up and says, "Oh... I like this."

That little moment is usually where the sale begins.

Choose the bag for the customer first. Then think about weight, dimensions, handles, quality and design.

After all, everybody needs something to carry life's bits and pieces around in.

You might as well give them a good one.
