There is a rather surprising story behind these drums. Blitar, a quiet little city in East Java, is something of a secret drum-making centre.
When David and Bondhan from Ancient Wisdom visited in 2025, they discovered local workshops making and exporting Djembes around the world – including to China, Germany, India and even Africa. Not quite what we expected to find tucked away in this peaceful corner of Java.
Watching them being made was fascinating. The Djembes start with raw jackfruit wood logs, which are turned into shape on a lathe, treated and dried, then carved, painted and finished by hand. The goatskin head is fitted, tensioned and tuned – considerably more work goes into a drum than you might imagine.
The producer also showed AW certification relating to the sustainable sourcing of the jackfruit wood.
Bondhan, who works with our Indonesian team and is also a musician, naturally had to test them. His verdict: properly made, good quality instruments. From that visit came new ideas and designs especially for the Ancient Wisdom range.
It's a nice story to tell in the shop: these aren't simply anonymous drums arriving from a factory somewhere. AW actually went to Blitar, met the makers and watched the drums being made from the log upwards.
A small but important material note: Djembes and other drums made with genuine goatskin are not suitable for vegans. The wooden Healing Rainsticks do not use goatskin and are suitable for vegans.
