V-Day In India
Last weeks news letter about my visit to an Indian backwater bank, drew a big response. Quite a few emails from actual Indian folk, who are not only AW customers but all seem to be able philosophers. I had one quite rude email from someone who seemed to think I was been rude about Indian people. Which I wasn't.
One lady wrote me:
"I have written to you in reply to your hilarious email and hope it answers some of your question you have. Why you were allowed to jump the queue, why no one checked your identity, why you waited for along time?"
she went on:
"In a nut shell, David we Indians are more often sincere, trusting, loyal and indeed very loving people. If we see a white (or a person from African origin), we forget everything else and treat them with respect, not out of some kind of subservient attitude but genuine respect for a guest. We go all out and make a guest more comfortable than we are. We would like to shower all our affection as one would to a very dear long lost friend or relative. And we trust a white man.To be honest this was one of the reasons, inspite of Indians being brave and their ability to fight like a tiger lost their country to the English because they trusted white men".
Actually there are so many delightful Indian people, you just meet and chat to in shops or airport lounges I can't tell. Anyone who has traveled to India will tell you. It's always been like this, but India really is also changing for the better in so many ways.
Airline travel is just so much less hassle in India. I can book flights here with a few clicks, and the price is the price, no extra for bags, no taxes charged separately, no sneaky after filling everything in little extras and NO credit card fees. I can cancel a flight at another click, minimal fee. I arrive at the check in and never have to wait in snake like queue - usually here just two minutes. Most EU airlines are run by a bunch of dodgy penny-pinching crooks, honestly - would you treat your customers like they treat us? ( hey, it's not the staff, they do a difficult job well).. sorry about that, rant over.
Well it's almost Valentines day, really.. it's only the weekend after next.
In India they call it V-Day, and this being India there are old school kill-joys who see it as a threat to Indian culture - arranged marriages and all that. But this is an India filled with a huge fun loving younger generation, determined to join in the global romancing, the scene is set for some Bollywood style farce.
