The Moon & the Wonder of Woollies

Lots of people wrote to me following last weeks newsletter, when I asked if you were a whoosher or a scraper. Read it here. Do you scrape the ice of your car or whoosh it off with warm water?
One person, who I think missed the point, pointed out that a chipped window may crack if subjected to dramatic changes in temperature. So it is safer to be a scraper. (Many thanks for the H&S advise). Another pointed out that scraping can be enjoyable, well I suppose so, whatever... Another told me he was in a third category: "The Thinker" who just serenely sits in the car, engine running until the ice melts enjoying the gradual glacial process of watching ice melt. Using the time for meditation and reflection.
It's getting towards year end and I suppose it is time for reflection - it's been a jolly strange year after all. Today I heard on the grapevine that another major gift importer has gone bust and two others are simply packing in this week. Woolworth's could have some connection. I know Woollies has been a bit hopeless in recent times but it's demise is a bit like loosing a friend. It's practically part of British heritage like fish & chips or the Beatles. Who doesn't have childhood memories of being dragged past the pick and mix or buying a discount copy of "NOW 25".
At least they went out with a bang having the best ever trading day in the companies history, but still a sad day for British retailing. Sadder still for the staff and suppliers. I suppose such a large retailing void will have to be filled in some way. Maybe it's not such a bad time to open a new shop?
There's a reflective thought for you... Here's another one..
I was just thinking that difficult times tend to depress business in to inaction. And yet history tells us that this is precisely the right time to grab opportunities and run with them. It's times like this that those with go and drive, stop watching the ice melt and get out there and..well.. go and drive, grabbing opportunities. Here's another thought, Woolworth's sales were about a million pounds per hour... where's that going to go?
Final thought.. if you look up tonight.. Friday's full moon could appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full moons - apparently the moon is closer than normal and so looks bigger. (The BBC can tell you why). That's the biggest in 14 years since.. well since the height of the last bad recession.
So why not grab that glass of red wine and take a walk outside, look up at the moon and make some plans..
