A Neat Travel Trick

Since last week newsletter in India, I have flown Bangalore and on to Bangkok and from there on AirAsia (the Ryanair of the East) to Bali, Indonesia. From here I'll shortly be getting a domestic flight to the city of Yogyakarta on Java. Yes it was new to me too, they tell me it's where much of the craft, Jewellery and gift-ware is manufactured in Indonesia..  One of the importers "secret cities". A little like Yiwu in China, which importers tried to keep a secret for years - and since I spilled the beans in this newsletter, I plan the same here!

Next week I'll give you the run down on Yogyakarta. I'm going in a little cold, but have contacts of contacts, lined up as guides and some potential suppliers to see. Should be an adventure.

I just want to share a neat trick I have stumbled on with Asian airways (it's worked for me three times on different airlines). If you are traveling east it maybe worth knowing.
I just book on line the usual economy seat, then at check-in ask as politely and humbly as possible, if an upgrade to business class is available and how much would it cost. Someone told me you can even negotiate the price, but what I have been quoted has only been small money.. a fraction of the base seat price. Generally they only accept cash for the upgrade.. er.. yes, I'm thinking that to. 

Anyway the upgraded flight from Bangalore to Bangkok (on Bangkok Air) was a dream. Access to the first class lounge, free food, fine wines and internet access (already got my cash value back), then fast tracked on the plane bypassing an Indian security finger search of hand luggage. Flatbed seat, fine food, fluffy cushions. Free use of Samsung tablets loaded with movies.  It was great, then the best bit was on arrival. If you have been to Suvarnabhumi, it's a beautiful airport, but you will know the terminals can be twenty minutes walk to immigration and clearing immigration at busy times can be an hour or so in a snaking queue.. 
A car was waiting on the steps to take me and one other passenger to whisk us from the plane to an entrance just by immigration. Where sure enough there was a vast sea of people waiting.
Our Bangkok Air guide took us to through the diplomatic and VIP channel, just one or two in the line. Even my luggage was collected for me with a guy to take it to my car.

Did I feel guilty? Yes a bit, but then this is my job. My job is sourcing products, ie to find great value interesting items and pass them on to our customers. So the above is my tip for you today. Also if you flying.. this site is good: http://www.airlinequality.com
